Kia Ora Waiuku - Drug Free and Alcohol wise
- This may seem obvious but our relationships with each other as parents and family life strongly impact whether or not our rangatahi/youth will be involved in risky behaviours, including alcohol use.

- Waiuku teens like others all around New Zealand whose parents tell them to avoid alcohol are less likely to drink alcohol.

- Parents play a significant role in protecting our Waiuku teens from alcohol use. Our college aged youth are more protected against alcohol use if they feel parental connectedness, which basically means having sense of closeness to parents and feeling loved and cared for by parents. No surprise here.

- Being around as a parent despite work commitment's, is of-course also important in-fact it's another protective factor against alcohol use, although to a lesser degree.

- But whanau in the end it's our students who have easy access of alcohol at home who are more likely to drink alcohol. Whanau this is not rocket science. Know where your teens are, don't supply them alcohol and set good examples as a parent and whanau, reject and challenge bad drinking behaviour, take a conscious stand against drugs (yes including weed), hidden family violence and strengthen the bonds between families and friends.

- This is the challenge for all our Waiuku families.
